Victoria Elaine Cox and Evan Cox Obituary: Two Fort Wayne residents killed in multi-vehicle crash involving a wrong-way driver; Walter Saucedo-Mendoza car accident.
Two persons were killed in a fatal crash early on Sunday morning, and the Indiana State Police are investigating.
According to a press release from Indiana State Police, a wrong-way driver was reported to Madison County Dispatch at approximately 2:21 a.m. on Sunday. After receiving a second call about a head-on collision on I-69 at the 234-mile marker close to Daleville at 2:31 in the morning, dispatch sent officers to the scene in an effort to identify.
Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, they discovered that numerous damaged cars were obstructing the southbound lanes of Interstate 69. According to an initial inquiry, a silver Kia Forte crashed head-on with a white Chevrolet Malibu when it was going north in the southbound lanes. A third car, a silver Volkswagen, struck the Kia’s engine on the road, causing it to become detached from the car and become stuck in the left lane. Subsequent to the first impact, the Kia collided with a semi-tractor-trailer traveling south and stopped.
At the scene, the Chevrolet Malibu’s driver and passenger were both declared deceased. Victoria Elaine Cox, 32, of Fort Wayne, and Evan Daniel Cox, 26 of Fort Wayne, were later confirmed as the driver and passenger.
The 30-year-old Indianapolis resident Walter Saucedo-Mendoza was confirmed as the Kia’s driver. Mendoza was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis after being taken to one in the surrounding region.
The drivers of the semi-tractor trailer and the Volkswagen did not suffer any injuries.
It is believed that alcohol played a role in the collision.
For four and a half hours, the southbound lanes of I-69 were closed to facilitate the crash site’s investigation.
