Shirley Jo Finney, a celebrated international theatre director who was born in Merced, California, has gone away. Her works include Hey Good Lookin’ (1982), Nuts (1987), and Lou Grant (1977), among others.

Shirley Jo Finney passed away after a protracted illness, according to a social media post by Stephen Sachs that said, “It breaks my heart beyond words to inform her demise. I am very devastated. For 26 years, she was my soul mate in theatre.

Shirley Jo Finney, a celebrated actress and award-winning director of theatre, television, and film, was born in Merced, California, on July 14, 1949.

The McCarter Theatre, The Pasadena Playhouse, The Goodman Theatre, The Alabama Shakespeare Festival, The Cleveland Playhouse, The Fountain Theatre, LA Theatre Works, The Crossroads Theatre Company, The Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, The Sundance Theatre Workshop, The Mark Taper Forum Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, and The State Theatre in Washington are just a few of the prestigious regional theatres where she has directed plays.

She also directed Winnie, a worldwide opera performed entirely in South Africa and based on the life of Winnie Mandela, a political icon.

For her directing work, Miss Finney has won prestigious honours including the 2017 Denham Fellowship from the SDCF, the Milton Katsleas Distinguished Career Award from the LA Drama Critics, the LA Stage Alliance Ovation Award, The Los Angeles Drama Critics Award, The LA Weekly Award, The NAACP, and the Santa Barbara Independent awards.
