Ryucheru Obituary – Death: Japanese Social Media Personality Ryuji “Ryuchell” Higa Died of Suicide at 27Years

Unexpectedly, Ryucheru, a Japanese singer, model, social media star, and campaigner, passed away.

Today, July 12, 2023, Ryuji Higa, also known to many as Ryuchell, was officially pronounced dead. Ryucheru passed away at the age of just 27. Their pals adored them for having a quirky, hilarious personality that they were never hesitant to display.

Who was Ryucheru?

On September 29, 1995, Ryuji Higa was born in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Chiharu Higa, a singer, was Ryuchell’s older sister. Additionally, Ryuchell went to the same high school as JO1 member Sho Yonashiro.

Ryuchell and Peco, a well-known online personality from Japan and model, got married on December 31, 2016. They excitedly announced the arrival of their son in July 2018, naming him Link after Link Larkin from the musical “Hairspray.”

On August 25, 2022, Ryuchell posted a huge discovery about himself on Instagram. They said that they no longer identified as men, which had a negative impact on their marriage to Peco.

Ryuchell preferred to be referred to as Peco’s “life partner” and their son’s “parent” instead. Ryuchell and Peco’s agencies later acknowledged their divorce, although originally denying that the pair had separated.

In a September 2022 interview with the Japanese women’s magazine Very, Ryuchell and Peco were candid about their marriage and Ryuchell’s sexual orientation. Ryuchell has always been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights, and since 2018, they have served as a moderator for Tokyo Rainbow Pride.

Following their divorce, Ryuchell became an outspoken supporter of the LGBT community. They frequently appeared on Japanese talk shows to promote the rights of LGBT people there.

Ryuchell has also been actively involved as a Tokyo Rainbow Pride organizer since 2018. Ryuchell started appearing as a woman in the final months before they died. Ryuchell did not publicly acknowledge their own transgender identification, although holding the transgender flag and expressing solidarity for transgender people.

How did Ryucheru die?

Ryuchell was discovered unconscious on July 12, 2023, by their workplace manager at a talent agency in Shibuya’s Sasazuka district. Sadly, they were later identified as dead. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, suicide was thought to be the cause of death.
