Ruth Colby Obituary News; Ruth Colby Death – Cause of Death

The healthcare industry, as well as the people of New Lenox, Illinois, and beyond, were given devastating news on Sunday, October 15, 2023. Silver Cross Hospital’s president and chief executive officer, Ruth Colby, has passed away. Her death’s undetermined cause has left a vacuum in the hearts of those who knew and collaborated with her. On October 1, 2017, Ruth Colby took on her crucial position at Silver Cross Hospital, capping a spectacular twelve-year tenure there.

Ruth’s tenure at Silver Cross was marked by visionary leadership and a relentless commitment to excellence. From the moment she joined the hospital in 2005, she was entrusted with a multitude of responsibilities that included shaping the hospital’s vision, overseeing marketing, planning, strategy, government relations, physician relations, and recruitment, among other critical areas.

Under Ruth’s guidance, Silver Cross Hospital underwent a transformative period. Her foresight and strategic acumen drove the hospital to develop pioneering partnerships with some of Chicago’s leading medical centers. Notable collaborations included the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, University of Chicago Medicine for cancer services and neurosciences, Rush University Medical Center for lung surgery, and Lurie Children’s Hospital for pediatric services. One of the hospital’s most significant milestones during Ruth’s tenure was the opening of the Amy, Matthew, and Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in August 2022, which marked Will County’s first and only Level III NICU.

Furthermore, her partnership with US HealthVest resulted in the construction of a 110-bed behavioral health hospital on the Silver Cross Campus. The hospital’s growth and innovation trajectory was not limited to clinical partnerships but extended to health insurance. Ruth’s instrumental collaboration with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois exemplified her ability to cultivate innovative and productive relationships that benefited not only the hospital but the community at large.
