Riordan and Melissa Powell Obituary News: Suspect arrested after double-fatal crash in Broomfield; Jose Menjivar arrest & charges.

The Broomfield Police Department has arrested one person in connection with Tuesday’s (12/12/23) fatal crash at Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard, near Broomfield High School.

According to BPD in a media release on Friday, December 15, 2023, 37-year-old Jose Menjivar was released from a local hospital and booked into the Broomfield County jail this afternoon on charges of Vehicular Homicide Reckless, Vehicular Homicide DUI and Habitual Traffic Offender. He was driving the 2000 Toyota Tundra that crashed into the victim’s vehicle, a 2016 Mazda CX-5.

Sadly, 47-year-old Melissa Powell and her 16-year-old son, Riordan, were killed. The investigation into the cause continues, but it’s believed alcohol and speed were contributing factors, police said.

The BPD is awaiting the official toxicology report that is currently being confirmed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations.

The police department sends its deepest condolences to the Powell family during this difficult time. Additional information on this case will be shared as it becomes available.

Melissa was a mother of three, and Riordan, a student at Broomfield High School and Boulder TEC. Both will be remembered as lights in the lives of many.
