Peter Ridgway has reportedly passed away after a long fight with his health. Ridges (player number 166) started with Long Island’s junior team in the early 1980s and played 217 games with the adult team. He scored 4,355 runs at a rate of 21.78 runs per over, with a high score of 144.
Ridges played in an under-14 flag back in 1981–1982, and during his senior career, he played in 3 grand games where the 5th XI lost. Throughout his career, he was a great leader, competitor, and teammate in the lower grades. He was always very helpful to the younger players going up through the grades.
Off the field, he was a life member, clubman of the year in 1995/96, secretary for three years in the early 2000s, and was voted in as president in 2002/03, which was a very important time in Long Island’s history. He ran for president to keep Long Island out of any merger talks. We went on to win the Provincial flag that year, and we are still called the Long Island Cricket Club.
Ridges was an important part of our club for 23 years while he was at Long Island. He was a larger-than-life character during our club’s amazing rise from a sub-district struggler in the 1980s to a provincial powerhouse in the late 1990s.
He was a passionate Long Islander who made sure the other team knew it. Ridges moved on to other things after he was president. He was last seen playing with his son Cooper at Old Peninsula, where he no doubt left his mark.
He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and family. May they be strengthened to bear the lost. May his soul rest in peace.
