Mike Schuster Obituary; On Monday, November 6, Mike Shuster, an international and diplomatic journalist who had won awards from National Public Radio, passed away. His work as a writer and editor led him all over the world, giving him the opportunity to see some of the most important moments in modern history.
Shuster’s family claims he died of effects from Parkinson’s illness in his Southern California home. 76 was his age. He started his long career in Africa in the early 1970s, working for Liberation News Service and spending five months covering the civil conflict in Angola. He also traveled much throughout the continent during that time. Shuster enjoyed a multi-decade career of accomplishment.
Since joining NPR in 1980, he has contributed more than 3,000 pieces. His reporting has covered the battles in the Gulf, the wars in Israel and Palestine, the war in Kosovo, the civil war in Bosnia, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In her capacity as a senior diplomatic correspondent, Shuster covered issues including terrorism, the Pacific Rim, and the nonproliferation of nuclear and other WMDs.
Mike visited Iran on at least seven occasions after 2004, becoming one of the few American journalists to stay for prolonged periods of time there. As a result, he gained notoriety across the nation.
Shuster started his career as an NPR employee in New York. In a now-famous case, his coverage of the trial of renowned mobster John Gotti resulted in a historic court decision that loosened the FCC’s ban on the broadcast of profanity.
Shuster’s insistence that listeners hear Gotti’s tirades, which were captured on an FBI wiretap, led to this.
