The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas is mourning the death of Judge Michael J. Russo.

Judge Russo passed away on Monday evening, October 9, surrounded by his family following a long and courageous health battle, leaving behind his wife, children and grandchildren. He was 68 years old.

According to court officials, he practised law privately at Ulmer & Berne, LLP before being elected in 2002. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Dallas, he transferred to Old Dominion University to get his master’s. He also held a law degree from Cleveland State University.

Judge Russo ruled over thousands of cases during his tenure on the bench, including many well-known ones like the one in which he sentenced Ariel Castro to 1,000 years in jail plus life without parole.

“Over the past year, Judge Russo displayed amazing strength while fighting his illness. Judge Michael Russo was tenacious in his efforts to overcome his medical challenges and return to the courtroom. He felt it was an honor to do the work of the community that we are proud to serve each day,” Administrative and Presiding Judge Brendan J. Sheehan said.
