Before his family moved to Shakopee in 1956, he was born and raised in Cologne, Minnesota. Jim studied at Shakopee Senior High School, where he earned his 1966 diploma. He developed a strong work ethic and a passion for his family and community during his formative years.

Jim wed Alice Marie Wagener, the joy of his life, on November 24, 1973. Together, they lived their lives and realized their aspirations, making their union a monument to unwavering love and cooperation. Before he retired in 2006, Jim devoted many years of his life to his position as a grain weighing supervisor for the Minneapolis Grain Exchange.
