Through a Facebook post from Western UP Trail Reports on Wednesday, November 15, the snow-loving community learned of the tragic passing of renowned meteorologist John Dee Snow Central.
In addition to expressing their sorrow, fans and followers reflected on the man who pioneered the practice of informing snowmobilers on the state of the snow.
The Western UP Trail Reports sent their sincere condolences to Nora, John’s daughter, as well as to his friends and extended family.
Born and reared in the Chicago suburbs, John Dee was enthralled with the wonder of snow just like any other youngster.
His infatuation with snowflakes gently falling under the spotlight set him on a path that would combine his passion for snow with his vocation.
Following his studies at Purdue University and the University of Wyoming, John began a meteorological career spanning both the public and commercial sectors. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the field.
After serving as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Washington, D.C. for eighteen years, he worked independently for eighteen years as a private forecaster.
John took a crucial choice in January 1999 to relocate his offices to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula’s Keweenaw Peninsula.
