Ian Faires, a beloved music instructor at Charlotte, North Carolina’s Porter Ridge High School, passed away this week at the age of 41 following a battle with liver failure. The town is in grief.

Before his health suddenly deteriorated, Faires had been fighting the illness for a while. His friend shared the painful news that Faires was getting ready for “his new life with Jesus” and would go “any day now” on social media.

Friends and family who were grieving for Faires have paid tribute to him online, honoring his colorful personality.

His sister stated that her brother “passed peacefully around 12:15 this morning” and thanked everyone for their “memories and kind words.”

Born in Charlotte, Ian Faires attended Garinger High School before graduating. Before going back to his hometown, he attended Appalachian State University to study music education.

Faires impacted the lives of innumerable kids during his more than 15 years as a band teacher at Porter Ridge High School.

Faires’ ability to push pupils outside of their comfort zones and her tolerance and encouragement were appreciated by former students.

Before beginning high school, one student who had relocated to North Carolina referred to Faires as “the kindest soul” for having accepted her into the band despite her fear of joining.
