A car accident in Downey on Sunday claimed the lives of a district attorney’s office investigator from Los Angeles County and his wife, an elementary school teacher.

Both Annabel Guerrero, 47, a teacher who had worked for the Downey Unified School District, and her husband Emilio Guerrero, 52, a sergeant with the L.A. County district attorney’s office division of investigation, died at the scene, according to the police. They were both Downey locals.

According to district spokeswoman Evelyn Somoza, Annabel Guerrero taught first grade at Patrick Henry Elementary School in the Long Beach Unified School District.

“We’re deeply saddened by this tragedy and send our heartfelt condolences to the family and their loved ones. We’re offering counseling to students who need support,” Somoza said in a statement.

A 60-year-old South Gate driver struck Emilio Guerrero’s car at Paramount Boulevard and Gardendale Street soon after 2 p.m., according to a news release from the Downey Police Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported that the unnamed motorist was taken to a hospital in severe condition. According to authorities, when emergency personnel got on the scene, one vehicle was on its side, and all three occupants were still inside. The accident’s cause is still being looked into.
