A young crew member who tragically lost his life in a fall on a vessel 200km off the southwest coast of Cork on Thursday is being remembered and honored by tributes.
Local authorities have identified the individual in question as Desmond ‘Des’ Hurley, a 28-year-old resident of Eltins Wood in Kinsale, Cork.
In the early hours of the morning, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an alarming discovery was made. A fisherman was found in an unconscious state, prompting immediate concern. Despite concerted efforts, the man’s revival proved to be unsuccessful.
According to local residents, Mr. Hurley was described as an avid fishing enthusiast who had a deep passion for the activity. They referred to him as a remarkable young man who, from a young age, always preferred to spend his time fishing alongside his grandfather, Christy.
Mr. Hurley was also honored with tributes on the widely recognized fishing website, The Skipper. In a recent statement, it was announced that the Skipper has expressed their heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the family, crewmates, and friends of fisherman Des Hurley. Tragically, Hurley lost his life in a devastating accident at sea yesterday.
In response to the tragic incident, Patrick Murphy, the chief executive of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organization, expressed his deep concern for the community, describing the event as devastating. The family is currently experiencing unimaginable grief. At this time, they have requested privacy.
In a tragic turn of events, it has been reported that Mr. Hurley, a beloved individual, has left behind a grieving family. He is survived by his partner Larissa, parents Jimmy and Noreen, brothers Chris and Mark, and sisters Jemma and Vikki. The loss has undoubtedly left a void in their lives. The funeral mass for the deceased will be held on Monday, December 18, at St. John the Baptist Church in Kinsale. The mass is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., following a brief gathering at 10.40 a.m. After the mass, the burial will take place at St. Eltin’s Cemetery, with the procession passing through the Pier.
According to the Department of Transport, an incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, approximately 100 nautical miles west of the Blasket Islands.
“The Coast Guard communicated with the ship.” At the scene, the crew member received CPR with assistance from Medico Cork through the ship’s satellite radio communication system. However, despite efforts, the outcome was tragically unsuccessful. The incident was reported to An Garda Siochana, who were then informed. As a result, the vessel in question promptly returned to port.
