On Monday, November 13, 2023, the New York State Police began investigating a fatal vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 23 in the town of Greenport. Troops were dispatched by Columbia County 911 to State Route 23 at Ponderosa Drive prior to 5:45 p.m. due to reports of two fully burned up cars.
Michelle J. Burnham, 59, of Delanson, New York, was taken to Greenport Rescue for medical assistance by the Greenport Fire Department after they extricated her from her smoldering 2003 Hyundai Elantra.
Burnham was admitted to Albany Medical Center as his condition worsened. At the scene of the crash, 57-year-old David Warfield of Hudson, New York, who was operating a 2011 Toyota Tacoma, was pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Warfield was passing many vehicles while traveling east on State Route 23 in the westbound lane. Then, Warfield hit Burnham in the eastbound lane while attempting to avoid an uninvolved westbound car. The investigation into this is still ongoing.
