Amilcar Gomez Edinburg Accident: Edinburg man arrested for DUI and fatally striking a cyclist east of Edinburg.

Authorities reported that a 19-year-old Edinburg male was detained after reportedly hitting a cyclist fatally while driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, 19-year-old Alan Nicolas Rios was detained on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter and an accident resulting in death.

The incident happened at 11 p.m. on Sunday on Tower Road, east of Edinburg and north of South Trail Drive, according to the press release.

According to DPS, a white Chevrolet Tahoe struck the bicycle before speeding away. A short time later, the Tahoe was discovered close to the intersection of Texas Road and Alamo Road with “damage consistent with evidence found at the crash scene.”

Amilcar Gomez, a 36-year-old Edinburg resident and biker, was seriously injured in the accident and passed away on the spot.

Authorities added that when they found Rios, the troopers sought to give him field sobriety tests. He was apprehended and sent to the Hidalgo County Detention Facility.
