Alice Jones Obituary News: In Loving Memory of Alice Jones
At the age of 96, Keizer native Alice Rose Jones died away quietly on December 4. Her life served as an example of enthusiasm, devotion, and continuous support for her community, family, and students. Fred Louis and Cora Gardner Rose welcomed her into the world on January 25, 1927, in Salem. Alice was born and raised in Mt. Hood, OR, and then later moved back to Salem. She graduated in 1943 from Salem North High School after attending Yew Park School, Bush, Leslie Jr. High, and other schools. She assisted in the construction of the Liberty and Victory ships while working at the shipyards for Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation the same summer.
A Love of Teaching and Music
After pursuing her love of music, Alice graduated from Willamette University, where she also met Jesse M. Jones Jr., a fellow choir member who would become her husband. They tied the knot in August 1948. Over the course of her 27-year teaching career, she had a profound impact on the lives of numerous students. She assisted in the Willamette music department, taught band at Woodburn High School, and taught music at Franklin Jr. High in Yakima, Washington.
Family Life and Participation in the Community
When Jesse started working in the Fish & Game Division of the Oregon State Police, Alice and Jesse temporarily relocated to Lakeview, Oregon. They established their family after moving back to Salem, welcoming their son Mark and daughter Coralie a few years later. Alice returned to teaching music at Judson Jr. High, North Salem High, where she also taught English classes, and she was a member of the opening faculty at McNary High School after taking a break to raise her children.
A Mentor and Leader
Alice was a teacher for a long time, but she was also a mentor and a leader. She performed for charitable groups in Disneyland and Hawaii with her singing ensemble, the Highlanders. She taught her students to love music and to be proud of their accomplishments, demonstrating her commitment to them outside of the classroom.
Acknowledgment and Service in the Community
There was recognition for Alice’s efforts to her community. In 1977, she was recognized as a Keizer First Citizen, a recognition of her dedication to improving the lives of people around her. Future generations will be inspired by her service and dedication.
