Elfriede Kreutzer Martin Accident; Victim Killed in A Single-Vehicle Crash on Old Sandy Run Road in Lexington County
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a tragic occurrence occurred in Lexington County on Thursday afternoon, resulting in the death of an 87-year-old woman in a single-vehicle collision.
The traumatic crash occurred on Old Sandy Run Road, approximately three miles east of Gaston, and included a 2018 Toyota SUV traveling south, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. William Bennett.
Around 2:30 p.m., as the vehicle approached the intersection with Pine Plain Road in Swansea, it went off the road to the right, colliding with an embankment and trees.
Sadly, despite efforts to save her, the driver, Elfriede Kreutzer Martin, 87, of Columbia, died from her injuries after being taken to Prisma Health Richland.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified Martin, confirming that she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
This heartbreaking incident adds another tragedy to South Carolina’s traffic fatality statistics. The state Department of Public Safety recorded 851 lives lost on South Carolina roadways in 2023 as of Friday, emphasizing the importance of road safety measures.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are both aggressively investigating the facts behind this unfortunate incident, hoping to shed light on what happened.
