What was Aaron McAtee’s cause of death?

Chief of Monticello Police Britt D. Smith said in a press statement that when officers arrived at Fareway Meat and Grocery on Tuesday, shortly before 7:30 a.m., they found 48-year-old Aaron McAtee shot close to a loading dock outside the business.

He died on the route to the hospital after being taken there. The search was initiated by the detectives once they had established that Nathan Russell, 38, of East Dubuque, Illinois, was the suspect.

A Delaware County deputy spotted Russell in the town of Hopkinton, about ten miles (16 kilometers) from Monticello. Smith claims that after Russell refused to comply, the deputy shot him “in the attempt to detain Russell.”
