Denne Cruz’s Early Life
Denne Cruz was raised in an abusive family and endured a difficult childhood in Kentucky, USA, which caused him to leave home at a young age. He went through periods of homelessness during his adolescence, moving about a lot and trying to make ends meet himself.
Denne depended on the school-provided lunch and breakfast during this difficult time, frequently staying late to use the facilities after sporting events before looking for a place to stay the night.
When the school’s authorities learned that he was homeless when he was sixteen, they showed him an abundance of love and support, as did his foster parent, a kind Christian pastor.
Cruz continued his schooling while playing collegiate basketball, and in 1990 he graduated with a degree in social science. Later, he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he played representative basketball while completing the requirements for his political science degree. Simultaneously, he made contributions to the “Street Wise” programme of The Wesley Central Mission, which helps young people who are homeless.
