Sarat Barkataki, a prominent party leader and former Assamese Congress Minister, departed this life on Monday morning at the age of 86.
Authorities said that Barkataki was receiving treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
representing twenty-five years, the senior leader served as an MLA representing the Sonari Assembly constituency in the Jorhat district.
Barkataki served as Minister of Education during the final term of the late Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his sorrow by writing on his X account, “I am saddened to hear of the passing away of a senior politician, Mr. Sharat Barkatki, former Minister of Government of Assam.” In addition to being a clean-cut man, he is an accomplished politician.
He was a colleague for many years, and I learnt a great deal from him. His passing has left the Assamese political spectrum much mourned.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and pray to God for the veteran politician’s eternal peace. “There will be a full state funeral with dignity,” he continued.
Bhupen Borah, the president of the Assam Congress, too expressed his sympathies on X. “Our party has suffered a significant loss with Barkataki’s passing. I offer my deepest sympathies to the grieving family and pray for the serenity of his soul.
