Ruth M. Gyurko Obituary; Ruth M. Gyurko Of Carthage Passed Away At 95

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, Ruth M. Gyurko, 95, of 35322 Putman Hill Road, died away in the Carthage Area Hospital surrounded by her devoted family.

On March 16, 1928, Ruth was born in Natural Bridge to Eber and Grace (Stafford) Slye. She was a Carthage High School student. She wed Leslie Gyurko on June 29, 1946, at St. Henry’s Church in Natural Bridge. Reverend J. Karlton Dewey performed the ceremony. Before Leslie passed away in 2019, they were blissfully married for 72 years. She worked for Dr. Miller Cook, Durkee’s Bakery, the Carthage Central High School cafeteria, and the former Officer’s Loop on Fort Drum. Ruth was above all a loving wife, mother, and grandma.

She cherished the time she spent with her numerous friends and family, as well as dancing and listening to country music. For a number of years, she and Leslie were part of the Black River Valley Fiddlers.

Kathy of Lowville and Kyle (Sally) Gyurko of Edmeston are Ruth’s two grandchildren; she also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Jackson Foy and Kaelynn Gyurko, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Ruth is survived by her two children, Karlton (Alice) Gyurko of Carthage and Valerie (Andy Gladwin) Gyurko of Latham. Her parents, husband Leslie, sister Geraldine Slye Howe, brother Vernon Slye, and daughter-in-law Nancy Gyurko all passed away before her.

Additionally, the family would like to express their gratitude to the Carthage Area Hospital team for their attentive and compassionate care during Ruth’s final trip, as well as the staff in Dr. Mirza Ashraf’s office for their many years of customized treatment.
