Ed Smith Obituary-Death News; Resource Officer For Gretna Public Schools And a Sarpy County Sheriff Deputy

Ed Smith, a school resource officer at Gretna Public Schools and a Sarpy County Sheriff employee, passed away. On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, he lost his battle with disease.

A Facebook post announcing his death read, “We are saddened to announce the passing of active Constable Ed Smith.” Today, Dep. Smith abruptly passed away from what appeared to be health issues. His death’s precise cause is still unknown.

Smith spent over 25 years of his life serving with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, holding several significant positions during his tenure. The position he most recently held and most valued was that of School Resource Officer at Gretna Public Schools.

Before that, Dep. Smith was a committed Road Patrol constable and a key original member of the renowned ‘Honey Badger’ B-Shift. In addition, he was a founder member of the B-Shift known as the “Honey Badger.”

Smith’s commitment to public service is evident in his honourable service in the United States Marine Corps and as a trooper in the Nebraska State Patrol prior to joining the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy.

It was well known that Dep. Smith could tell a terrific yarn and was always willing to help anyone in need, both inside and outside of his official duties. In addition, he was well-known for his upbeat demeanour and optimistic outlook.
