Charles E. “Chuck” Young, a UCLA chancellor for a record 29 years whose influence is still felt throughout the Westwood campus, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at his Sonoma, California, home from natural causes. In age, 91.
At age 36, he was appointed chancellor in 1968, making him the youngest person to hold the position in the University of California system. Additionally, he is the first UCLA alumnus to have held the highest office on campus.
Young, the seventh of UCLA’s nine chief executives, oversaw the campus’s transformation from a regional to a world-class research university while leading it through the unrest of the 1970s and the tightening of fiscal constraints in the 1990s.
Despite these challenges, Young left UCLA stronger and more prestigious than before. The Grand Salon in Kerckhoff Hall, the primary internal thoroughfare on campus, and the Charles E. Young Research Library at UCLA are all named in his honour.
Chuck Young oversaw the transformation of UCLA into what it is now, according to UCLA Chancellor Gene Block: one of the country’s most comprehensive and prestigious research universities that is deeply committed to inclusivity and diversity.
He took on the numerous obstacles of his era head-on, and UCLA was well-positioned to handle the many obstacles to come because to his moral leadership.
