On Wednesday, a man lost his life after being knocked off a motorbike by an NYPD officer during a drug bust in the Bronx. The police, along with video footage of the incident, confirmed the officer’s involvement in the incident.
In a recent development, police officials have revealed that a “buy-and-bust” sting operation was underway in Kingsbridge Heights. The operation took an unexpected turn when a man, who remains unidentified, attempted to escape on a motorbike at approximately 5:30 p.m. According to the state attorney general’s office, Sgt. Erik Duran allegedly threw a cooler at him.
In the surveillance footage, captured during the incident, Eric Duprey can be seen riding his bicycle along the sidewalk. Suddenly, a cooler forcefully collides with him, causing him to lose control and subsequently crash to the ground. In a peculiar turn of events, the individual responsible for hurling the cooler seemed to lack the customary attire of a law enforcement officer.
According to the NYPD, the man was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS. According to spokesperson Julie Bolcer, the death is currently being investigated by the city’s medical examiner. The incident is currently under investigation by the state attorney general’s office.
In an Instagram post, the NYPD announced on Thursday that Duran was suspended without pay. In a recent development, it has been reported that his suspension took effect precisely at 3:05 a.m. The suspension was implemented “pending trial of charges pursuant to the administrative code,” as stated in a disciplinary record shared with Gothamist. In 2010, Duran made the decision to join the NYPD.
